Branding and Video for the Historic Square in Woodstock, IL

Historic-district signage, film-town tourism and Route 47 relief grants: we help Woodstock businesses market around what makes the Square different.

McHenry County seat · 25,630 residents (2020 Census) · About 9 miles from our McHenry studio

Woodstock is about 9 miles from our McHenry studio, close enough to be on the Square for a morning shoot and back editing by afternoon. We handle branding, video, websites and search for businesses around the county seat. Woodstock station, the second-to-last stop on Metra's UP Northwest Line, has 14 weekday trains to Chicago, and county government is one of the largest local employers.

This is not a typical small downtown. Film crews keep returning, the Square is a National Register historic district with its own design review, and Route 47 construction is pressing on local traffic right now. Good marketing here respects the first two and works around the third.

Marketing That Fits This Town

Selling a film town

Groundhog Day, Planes, Trains and Automobiles, Netflix's Monster: The Ed Gein Story and a Jeep Super Bowl ad with Bill Murray were all shot in Woodstock, and the City actively markets filming. Visitors come looking for those places, especially during Groundhog Days, set for Jan. 29 to Feb. 2 in 2027 with a walking tour of the filming sites. Businesses can list themselves and their events free on Real Woodstock, the City's visitor site, and tag #realwoodstock. We plan social content around that winter spike instead of writing January off.

Rebranding inside a historic district

An outdoor sign, or a window sign the public can see, needs a City sign permit, and A-frame sidewalk signs need an annual Sidewalk Sign Permit. Exterior changes in the Downtown Business Historic District need a Certificate of Appropriateness, approved administratively for simple work or by the Historic Preservation Commission for larger changes. When we design a logo for a Square business, we plan the sign version for that review and build the time into the schedule. A free brand audit is a low-risk first step.

Route 47 relief money can pay for marketing

The City's Route 47 Business Relief Fund offers grants of up to $5,000 to eligible brick-and-mortar businesses hit by the widening, and "marketing and customer outreach" is a listed use. Cycle 1 opened July 31, 2026. For a qualifying business, that could fund a site refresh or a local ad campaign.

One more detail: 23.4% of residents age 5 and up speak a language other than English at home, so bilingual English and Spanish pages are worth considering.

Drone Video & Airspace

Airspace over Woodstock Square is straightforward. At the city center and over the Square, FAA data show Class G from the surface to 700 ft AGL, and the center of town sits outside the O'Hare Class B shelf. No LAANC grid covers the city, so drone video at or below 400 ft needs no LAANC authorization.

Two things still shape our flight plans here:

  • A hospital heliport (FAA ID IL42, listed as Centegra Hospital-Woodstock) about 3 nautical miles south-southeast of the center, where medical helicopters may operate.
  • Two non-towered airports, Galt Field to the northeast and Lake in the Hills to the southeast, so we keep an eye out for low manned traffic.

Each shoot day starts with B4UFLY, a LAANC check and a TFR search. That is our process, not legal advice.

Shooting on Location

Woodstock has a stated film process. The City's tourism site says film permits are coordinated through the City of Woodstock (101 N. Johnson St., Suite 1C, 815-334-2277), and events on the Square or in the park are approved by the City Manager's Office. Fees and lead times are not published, so we confirm both before booking a date. Exterior photos of the Woodstock Public Library need no permission; commercial shoots inside need the director's approval at least a week ahead. Classic backdrops include the Square's park and gazebos, the 1889 Woodstock Opera House and the domed Old Courthouse Center.

Common Questions

Do we need a permit to film a commercial on the Woodstock Square?

Plan on one. The City coordinates film permits through its office at 815-334-2277, and events on the Square go through the City Manager's Office. Because fees and lead times are not published, we call early, confirm the scope and schedule, and only then lock your shoot date.

Can the Route 47 relief grant pay for our marketing?

It can. Marketing and customer outreach is an eligible use, with awards up to $5,000 per cycle and a two-cycle lifetime maximum. Businesses must be brick-and-mortar in the impact area, open at least 12 months, have 1 to 49 full-time equivalents, and show impacts such as a revenue drop of at least 10% over 90 days.

Should our Woodstock website be in English and Spanish?

Often, yes. Census data show 23.4% of Woodstock residents age 5 and up speak a language other than English at home. We can build a Spanish version of your key pages, from services to hours and directions, so those customers get the same clear information.
