Websites, Video and Drone Footage for DeKalb, IL

DeKalb is about 37 miles from our McHenry studio, but we already know this corner of the county. In Cortland, about 5 miles away, we built the website, shot the photography and drone footage, and animated the logo for Custom Scapes & Designs, a landscaping company. That mix of web design, photography, drone video and motion graphics is what we offer DeKalb businesses.

DeKalb runs on two clocks. Northern Illinois University reports 15,811 students for Fall 2026, next to a 2020 city population of 40,290, so a lot of local demand rises and falls with the academic year. Meanwhile, distribution centers, manufacturers and Meta's data center hire year-round and need recruiting content that works on a phone.

Market on the NIU calendar

Move-in, homecoming, graduation and the summer slowdown shape traffic for restaurants, apartments, salons and shops near campus. We plan content calendars around those dates and produce short vertical video for Instagram and TikTok through our social media management. Mobile-first sites matter here, because students check you out on a phone before they ever walk in.

Barb City heritage as a brand story

Joseph Glidden of DeKalb patented his barbed-wire design in 1874 and manufactured it locally with Isaac Ellwood. For long-standing local companies, that history makes good material for an about page or a brand refresh with local roots. The Ellwood House grounds and the Egyptian Theatre across from Van Buer Plaza give downtown shoots a strong sense of place.

Logistics, manufacturing and B2B hiring

The DCEDC's March 2026 employer list shows NIU at 3,072, Target's distribution center at 1,600, Amazon at 1,000, 3M at 800 and Ferrara/Ryder at 500. Meta's data center, opened in November 2023, represents more than $1 billion of investment and 200+ permanent jobs. Suppliers and contractors serving those operations need facility photography, capability pages and search visibility for the terms buyers actually use.

Dates that fill downtown

• DeKalb Corn Fest on Lincoln Hwy the last weekend of August, with its 50th anniversary set for August 27-29, 2027
• DeKalb Farmers Market on summer Thursdays at Van Buer Plaza, with 30+ vendors

FAA data shows no controlled surface airspace over downtown DeKalb, the NIU campus, the Peace Rd corridor or DeKalb Taylor Municipal Airport itself. Controlled airspace starts at 700 ft above ground, so Part 107 flights at or below 400 ft need no LAANC. That doesn't mean anything goes:

• DeKalb Taylor Municipal, about 2 miles east, has no tower, so we watch for and yield to manned aircraft, especially toward Peace Rd.
• Huskie Stadium's listed capacity is below the 30,000-seat threshold for the FAA's standing sporting-event TFR, but we still check NOTAMs on game days and stay clear of crowds unless the operations-over-people rules are met.
• The DeKalb Park District requires a permit to fly any aircraft in its parks.

We couldn't find an NIU campus drone policy, so we contact the university before flying there. Pilots working in DeKalb should check B4UFLY, LAANC and TFRs before each flight.

DeKalb Park District Ordinance 2026-04 says no one may take still or motion pictures for advertising in the parks without District permission, and groups over 50 need a Special Use Park Permit. No fee is published, so we call the District (815-758-6663) before booking Hopkins Park or another site. The Ellwood House Museum at 420 Linden Place allows standard photography on its grounds with no permit or fee, but professional photography isn't allowed inside the mansion. We found no published NIU rules for outside commercial photographers, so campus shoots start with a call to the university. Van Buer Plaza at 2nd and Locust is a strong downtown backdrop.

Do you need FAA authorization to fly a drone over NIU or downtown DeKalb?

Not in the areas we checked. There's no Class B, C or D over downtown or campus, and the nearby airport has no tower, so Part 107 flights up to 400 ft don't need LAANC. We still get permission from the property owner, contact NIU before any campus flight, and check NOTAMs when there's a home game at Huskie Stadium.

Can we shoot an ad in a DeKalb park or at the Ellwood House?

In a park, yes, once the DeKalb Park District gives permission, which its ordinance requires for any advertising photos or video. Groups over 50 also need a Special Use Park Permit. At the Ellwood House, the grounds are open to photography without a fee, but professional photography isn't allowed inside the mansion, so we plan exterior shots there.

When should a DeKalb business launch a new site or campaign?

Work backward from the academic year. Have a refreshed site and fresh content live before fall move-in, and plan event coverage for Corn Fest on the last weekend of August. Summer is the slow stretch for campus-dependent businesses, which makes it a good time to shoot photos and video without disrupting busy weeks.
