Lake Geneva is about 20 miles from our McHenry studio, just across the Wisconsin line. We'll be straight with you: Identity Start is an Illinois studio and hasn't done a Wisconsin client project yet. This town runs on visitors. Most of them decide where to stay and eat from a phone, long before they arrive. Resorts, vacation rentals, boat outfitters and downtown shops need photography, listing video and 360 virtual tours that do the selling. That is exactly the work we did for a vacation-rental client.

Selling a lake to people who live in Chicago

Lake Geneva is about 75 miles from Chicago and 40 from Milwaukee, and it earned the nickname Newport of the West from Chicago industrialists' summer estates. Your buyers are mostly out of town. Your SEO and ad targeting should reach Chicagoland, not just Walworth County. VISIT Lake Geneva, the regional destination marketing group, counts nearly 400 partner businesses around Geneva Lake, Lake Como and Delavan Lake.

Three seasons of demand, not one

Riviera Beach is staffed from Memorial Day through Labor Day, and that is the obvious peak. Two events stretch the calendar:

• Winterfest and America's Snow Sculpting Invitational, early February, at Riviera Plaza and Flat Iron Park
• The Jaycees Venetian Festival in August, with a lighted boat parade and fireworks

We schedule shoots so fresh photos are live before each wave, not after it. Seasonal landing pages, updated hours and event-week offers keep a listing from looking stale in the months when fewer visitors search.

Signs that pass historic review

Downtown properties in the Historic Preservation District go through the Historic Preservation Commission for sign, construction and architectural review, which issues Certificates of Appropriateness. That review adds time, so we build it into the schedule and hand over drawings early enough for the commission's calendar. When we design a logo or storefront sign here, we plan for that review from the first sketch.

From the FAA's side, aerial video over Lake Geneva is fairly open. FAA data shows no controlled surface airspace over the city center and no facility-map grid over downtown, the Riviera or north of town. Part 107 flights at or below 400 ft don't need LAANC. The Grand Geneva Resort Airport closed permanently in December 2024, so older drone guides that cite it are out of date.

The real limits are on the ground. Wisconsin state parks, including Big Foot Beach, prohibit drones except where posted. We don't fly over private estates along the Shore Path, and we give the Mercyhealth Walworth heliport room. Every flight starts with a B4UFLY, LAANC and TFR check.

Big Foot Beach State Park is the clearest case: paid photo or video work on Wisconsin DNR property needs a $50 Commercial Use Permit (Form 2200-128), filed at least two weeks ahead. The City's Parks page asks for 45 days' notice on events that need special permits but publishes no photo policy, so we confirm with the Parks Director first. Riviera Beach charges $10 admission in season. Other settings include the Riviera Ballroom, the Geneva Lake Shore Path (stay on the path), Flat Iron Park, and Black Point Estate.

When should a Lake Geneva business refresh its photos?

Before each wave of visitors. Aim to have new images live before Riviera Beach opens on Memorial Day weekend, before Winterfest in early February, and before the Venetian Festival in August.
